Homewood Mountain Resort to Remain Closed for 2024-25 Season

Unfortunately, one of the most beautiful ski resorts in the United States will not be open this upcoming winter.

Homewood Mountain Resort, located on the west shore of Lake Tahoe, will not be opening for the 2024-25 ski season.

Homewood, which is perhaps best known for stunning lake views and surprisingly high ticket prices, has made the announcement that they will not operate for this upcoming winter season. They have stated that their financial partner has pulled support due to problematic permitting timelines, which has been complicated by fears and rumors of Homewood becoming a private ski area. They submitted amendments for their 2011 master plan, which includes an 8-person gondola replacement for their Madden Chair, in spring of this past year and have not yet received approval. The gondola replacement has been sitting in a Reno parking lot for around a year now, according to Liftblog.

Homewood has stated they are still focused on moving forward with their master plan, despite permitting roadblocks. They also do not currently plan to become a private club anymore, despite past moves to do so.

Logistical issues, including heavy traffic in the region, have hurt Homewood's ability to operate profitably.

Our Take

Homewood has been a bizarre story to follow over the past few years. They have gone from a sleeper storm day destination with some of the best Tahoe views, to possibly the first private ski area in the Tahoe region, to an insanely expensive day trip, all while being one of the toughest destinations to get to due to traffic problems stemming from Palisades Tahoe and Northstar. Despite its spectacular views, Homewood has struggled to compete with larger, more reliable, and more modern resorts in the region, meaning few have been willing to go out of their way to visit.

While it is always a sad day when a ski area will close (though this is only for a single season at this time), most visitors to the Tahoe ski scene won’t notice too much, and for those planning a trip to Homewood there are plenty of other options in the area. The communities that are most affected are on the west shore of Lake Tahoe, who are losing their local hill known for few lift lines and great glades.

Spending all of his childhood in the frozen flatlands of Minnesota, Alex started snowboarding at a young age, but he changed direction toward different hobbies in high school. It wasn’t until a break from college that Alex started skiing while working in New Mexico and skied throughout the southern Rockies. He moved back to the Midwest to finish a degree in Forestry and spent winters exploring the many ski areas the upper Midwest has to offer. Now, Alex is living in California and working as a ski patroller at a local ski hill. He believes that every ski hill is worth visiting, no matter how small, and that any day skiing is better than a day sitting.
