Ikon Pass Adds Alyeska, Expanding into Alaska for 2023-24 Season

Alyeska, Alaska will become the Ikon Pass’s 56th downhill resort for the 2023-24 ski season.

Alterra has announced that Alyeska has joined the Ikon Pass suite for the 2023-24 season. This Alaska ski resort, which is approximately 40 miles south of Anchorage, will become the northernmost ski resort on Ikon by a substantial margin.

Full passholders will have access to 7 days at the mountain, while base passholders will have access to 5 days with holiday blackouts. The resort will also be included on the 2, 3, and 4-day Ikon Session Pass products.

Our Take

While Ikon’s addition of a mountain in Alaska of all place certainly might come across as a big splash, we don’t expect this development to change much about the Ikon Pass value proposition (we expect very few people to travel all the way to Alaska for their next ski trip). Alyeska is probably more of an exotic destination than a practical, well rounded getaway; with just an advertised footprint of 1,600 acres, Alyeska is smaller than most major Colorado, Utah, and Tahoe competitors, and with its far-flung location, it’s going to be a huge lift for most pass holders to get out there.

That said, this update continues the theme of Ikon offering access to a much broader suite of regions than Epic; Ikon already includes access to southern California, Montana, Wyoming, Oregon, and New Mexico, none of which are available on Epic. The Ikon Pass commands a significant price premium over its Epic competition, and by continuing to add new ski resort regions, Ikon may be trying to justify the extra cost.
