Jackson Hole Implementing Higher Parking Prices, More Stringent Carpool Requirements for 2023-24

Parking at Jackson Hole will be slightly more expensive this winter, with tighter carpool requirements.

Background

Wyoming’s popular Jackson Hole ski resort is revamping its parking policies for the upcoming 2023-24 season, with price hikes for the first time in four years.

Rates for the premium Village, Crystal Springs and Cody Lots have increased to $35 per day during off-peak times and $45 on core-season weekends and holidays—an increase of $5 from last year. For non-carpoolers, the rate for the Ranch Lot—which isn’t immediately slope side but sits a short shuttle ride from the slopes—has increased to $18 off-peak and $25 on weekends and holidays. The faraway Stilson Lot, which requires a 7-mile shuttle ride to reach the slopes with no traffic, will remain free.

Perhaps the biggest change this season is that Jackson Hole has upped its carpool threshold for free parking in the Ranch Lot. Unlike last season, when guests could score free parking in this lot with a carpool party of three or more, that requirement has now increased to parties of four or more. Carpool parties of exactly three people will still qualify for a discounted rate: $5 during off-peak times, and $10 during peak times. And like in past seasons, all Ranch Lot parking will remain free after 1pm.

The Teton Village Association, which runs these parking lots, says these changes are being made to mitigate access road traffic

Our Take

Jackson Hole’s access road traffic has never been the worst in North America, with its remote location and high cost of entry keeping demand to much more reasonable levels than some resorts in Colorado, Utah, and Tahoe. But traffic jams can still be a modest issue on the busiest days, and in increasing carpool requirements (and slightly increasing parking prices), it seems that the resort is hoping to further reduce the number of cars on the road.

One hack that locals have used for years to skirt the Ranch Lot carpool requirement is to stop by the Stilson Lot to pick up guests waiting for the shuttle bus—which can take a grueling 15 to 30 minutes to arrive during the late morning and early afternoon—and arrive to Ranch with the requisite number of carpoolees. But as a result of the higher carpool requirement, pulling this off will become harder than it used to be.
